Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center Named 100 Best for Joint Replacement

Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center Recognized by Healthgrades as Top 10% in Nation for Joint Replacement

[Wichita, KS] (October 20, 2021)  – Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement in 2022 and again named among the top 5% in the Nation for Joint Replacement, for the fourth year in a row. In addition, Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center is one of only four hospitals to be recognized with this achievement in Kansas, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 31 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*

The hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement have demonstrated exceptional quality of care for patients undergoing elective total knee or hip arthroplasty. From 2018-2020, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average, a 64.9% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.* Additionally, patients treated at hospitals which did not receive the America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average 2.85 times more likely to experience one or more complications in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that did receive the award.*

“Consumers can feel confident in the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement for their commitment to quality care and exceptional outcomes. The recognition helps provide peace of mind when selecting a place for care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades.

Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:

• Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ for 5 consecutive years (2018-2022)

• Five-Star recipient for Total Knee Replacement for 10 consecutive years (2013-2022)

• Five-Star recipient for Total Hip Replacement for 5 consecutive years (2018-2022)

• Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for 3 consecutive years (2019-2021)

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 31 common conditions and procedures and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 16 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected), and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected).

* Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2018 through 2020 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only. For appendectomy and bariatric surgery, Healthgrades used inpatient data from 16 states that provide all-payer data for years 2017 through 2019. Due to the highly variable impact of the pandemic on hospital outcomes, Healthgrades made the decision to exclude cases with a COVID-19 diagnosis from the 2020 data in order to preserve the statistical integrity of our models and fairly evaluate clinical outcomes at all hospitals. Wichita, Kansas (October 17, 2017) – Joint Replacement at Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center is among the top 10% in the nation—as measured by volume-weighted performance—according to this year’s evaluation from HealthGrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Every year, HealthGrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*

This achievement is part of findings released today by HealthGrades and is featured in their 2018 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.

This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2014-2016, patients treated at hospitals which did not receive the Joint Replacement Specialty Excellence Award are on average, 2.34 times more likely to experience one or more complication in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that did receive the award.* Similarly, patients treated at hospitals receiving the Joint Replacement Specialty Excellence Award have on average, 57.2% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center is also a Five-star recipient for Total Knee Replacement for six consecutive years, and a Five-star recipient for Total Hip Replacement and Spinal Fusion Surgery in 2018.

“Consumers value information about hospital quality and use it to evaluate their choices for care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, HealthGrades. “Hospitals that have achieved a specialty excellence distinction from HealthGrades prove a commitment to high-quality of patient care.”

*For its analysis, HealthGrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. HealthGrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories. Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center Awarded Coveted 2014 Leapfrog Top Hospital Distinction

Recognition Highlights the Nation’s Premier Hospitals for Safety and Quality

Wichita, KS December 2, 2014 – For the first time, The Leapfrog Group has named Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center to its annual list of Top Hospitals. An elite distinction awarded to hospitals nationwide for demonstrating excellence in hospital safety and quality through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is given to less than seven percent of all eligible hospitals. The awards, which are given annually, were announced at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting and Top Hospital Awards on December 2, in Washington, D.C.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States. It recognizes institutions for their excellence in quality of care and patient safety, as well as their commitment to transparency. By achieving Top Hospital status, Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center has proven it’s a premier institution and deserves to be recognized for its dedication to the families and patients in Wichita, KS,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.
Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center was one of 94 Top Hospitals recognized nationally. The list includes:
24 Top Rural Hospitals
61 Top Urban Hospitals
Nine Top Children’s Hospitals

Among the hospitals reaching this achievement are:
Academic medical centers
Teaching hospitals
Community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings

The selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.

The Top Hospital award is not given to a set number of hospitals, but rather, to all urban, rural and children's hospitals that meet the high standards defined in each year's Top Hospitals Methodology.
