Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center among nation's best for joint replacement

For a third consecutive year, Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center is one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement, according to Healthgrades, which each year evaluates the performance of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

Additionally, Kansas Surgery & Recovery:

  • Received 5-star ratings for both total hip and total knee replacement for a third year in a row, indicating that its clinical outcomes are better than expected when conducting these procedures.
  • Outperformed other hospitals in the nation when performing hip and total knee replacements, ranking in the top 5 percent in the nation for both procedures
  • Was recognized for a third year in a row with a Healthgrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award.

"As a specialty hospital, our environment is designed to allow the surgeons who operate here to provide optimal care to their patients, resulting in the best possible outcomes and patient experience," said Ely Bartal, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and long-time senior administrator for Kansas Surgery & Recovery, which earlier this year was named for a second year in a row as one of the top 5 percent in the nation for patient safety.

"We offer the ideal setting for high-quality, low-cost elective well-care procedures such as joint replacement and these awards are an independent confirmation of that," said Bartal.

The Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation highlights disparity in hospital performance for specific conditions and procedures and the impact that this variation has on health outcomes as well as increased costs and lengths of stay. For example, from 2011-2013, if all hospitals group performance was similar to the group performance of hospitals receiving 5-stars, on average 228,426 lives could potentially have been saved and 169,298 complications could potentially have been avoided.*

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically better than expected), 3-star (statistically as expected) and 1-star (statistically worse than expected) categories. Detailed performance information, such as cohort-specific outcomes data and quality achievements, as well as more information on the Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation, including the complete methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.

Kansas Surgery & Recovery is a physician-led hospital specializing in orthopedics. Owned in partnership with Via Christi Health and area physicians, the hospital will celebrate its 20th year of service to the community in spring 2015. Licensed for up to 34 beds, it features 12 operating rooms, two special procedure rooms and 30 pre- and post-operative stations.

The original hospital facility at 2770 N. Webb had 31,200 square feet. Two years later, another 11,200 square feet was added for an OR and patient bed expansion. A total of 6,000 square feet was added during facility expansions in 1998 and 2000 for MRI and light scanner additions. A second OR and patient bed expansion in 2006 added another 13,800 square feet.

*Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2011 through 2013 and represent 3-year estimates for Medicare patients only.

Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center Awarded Coveted 2014 Leapfrog Top Hospital Distinction

Recognition Highlights the Nation’s Premier Hospitals for Safety and Quality

Wichita,KS   December 2, 2014 – For the first time, The Leapfrog Group has named Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center to its annual list of Top Hospitals. An elite distinction awarded to hospitals nationwide for demonstrating excellence in hospital safety and quality through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is given to less than seven percent of all eligible hospitals. The awards, which are given annually, were announced at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting and Top Hospital Awards on December 2, in Washington, D.C.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States. It recognizes institutions for their excellence in quality of care and patient safety, as well as their commitment to transparency. By achieving Top Hospital status, Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center has proven it’s a premier institution and deserves to be recognized for its dedication to the families and patients in Wichita, KS,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center was one of 94 Top Hospitals recognized nationally. The list includes:

  • 24 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 61 Top Urban Hospitals
  • Nine Top Children’s Hospitals

Among the hospitals reaching this achievement are:

  • Academic medical centers
  • Teaching hospitals
  • Community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings

The selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.

The Top Hospital award is not given to a set number of hospitals, but rather, to all urban, rural and children's hospitals that meet the high standards defined in each year's Top Hospitals Methodology
